Burst Pipes in Western Kentucky: What to Do in the First Hour
A pipe that freezes and splits can dump hundreds of gallons into a house before anyone notices. Here is why it happens in western Kentucky, what to do in the first hour, and what comes after the plumber leaves.
Why do pipes burst in western Kentucky?
Our winters are mild most of the time, which is exactly why they catch people. Houses here are not built for a week of single digits. Supply lines in crawl spaces, exterior walls, garages, and unheated additions freeze first. The January 2009 ice storm took power out for weeks across the region, and a house with no heat for that long freezes from the outside in. Pipes rarely burst while they are frozen. They burst when they thaw.
What should you do the moment you find a burst pipe?
- Shut off the water at the main. Then open a faucet to relieve pressure.
- If water reached outlets, panels, or appliances, cut power to that area at the breaker.
- Call a plumber for the pipe and call VetDry for the water. The two jobs happen in parallel.
- Take photos of the pipe and the damage before anything gets cleaned up.
What does a restoration company do that a plumber does not?
The plumber fixes the pipe. We fix what the water did. That means finding every wet cavity with a moisture meter, including the ones behind finished walls and under floors, extracting standing water, removing insulation and drywall that will not dry, setting the right drying equipment, and monitoring until the structure is actually dry. A pipe fix without proper drying is how a burst pipe in February becomes a mold job in June.
Does insurance cover a burst pipe?
Sudden pipe failures are commonly covered; long-term leaks and freeze damage in an unheated home may be treated differently. We document the cause and the timeline carefully so your adjuster is working from facts, not assumptions.
How do you prevent the next one?
Insulate exposed lines in crawl spaces and garages, know where your main shutoff is before you need it, keep the heat on when you travel, and let faucets drip on the coldest nights.
